Four Swimmers Suspended After Alcohol Violations

Four UNC swimmers face suspensions resulting from alcohol-related arrests at a September party held at the residence of one of the team's senior captains.

On the morning of Sept. 20, police responded to an incident of loud music and talking at 703 N. Columbia St., the home of senior Harrison John Browning, 22, from Cincinnati. The police issued Browning, a senior captain on the swim team, a citation for giving/selling a malt beverage to a minor, a misdemeanor. Browning was suspended from the team through midnight Oct. 31.

Dave Lohse '79, associate director of Carolina's athletics communications office, said there were recruits present at the party.

Senior Alison P. Clemens, 21, of Staten Island, also a senior team captain, and junior Rebecca L. Kane, 20, of Toms River, N.J., both received citations for underage possession. According to the arrest report, Clemens refused a preliminary breath test but did state that she'd been drinking earlier at the Columbia Street address.

Clemens and Kane also were suspended from the swim team until Oct. 31. This sets the return for those three swimmers at the Nov. 6 meet with Maryland in Chapel Hill, the ninth meet of the season.

Michelle Parks Mudge, 18, of Mooresville, a citation on the same morning for a fraudulent use of ID at 149 ½ E. Franklin St., the address of Goodfellows Tavern. Mudge is a freshman on the team and is red-shirting this season.

Lohse said Mudge would serve her suspension during the 2010-11 season.

A fifth member of the team, Tyler Dustin Smith, 21, of Lighthouse Point, Fla., was cited for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, at the intersection of East Rosemary Street and Church Street early the same morning. Lohse said the junior is suspended from the team indefinitely.
